Montgomery County was formed in 1851 and Red Oak became the county seat in 1865. This is the second Montgomery County courthouse, replacing an earlier frame structure. The spectacular, castle-like, Romanesque style building, constructed of red Missouri sandstone and brick, has a forty foot clock tower. It was dedicated on July 4, 1890 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.
A very similar courthouse, designed by the same architect, is in Fairfield, Iowa, Jefferson County.
