MARKER TEXT:
In December, 1753, George Washington came here with notice from the Governor of Virginia to the French that they were trespassing on British soil. The statue shows Washington carrying out his first public mission.

This is a traditional blue and gold roadside marker located in front the George Washington Memorial Park which is the original site of Fort Le Boeuf in Waterford, Pennsylvania. The park features a statue of George Washington bearing the message from the Governor of Virginia that the French were trespassing on British territory. The statue is somewhat in error in that it depicts a very presidential visage (right off the quarter) of Washington when in fact he was only 21 years old when he carried out this mission.

On the return trip to Virginia, the young Washington was almost shot by an Indian near the present day Evans City. The Daughters of The American Revolution have a monument at that spot.
