The hotel was constructed between 1919 and 1923, and was named for proprietor Rufas A. Cherry. The Beaux Arts entrance features lion's masks supporting an elaborate pressed-metal canopy.
The hotel was described as "vacant" when placed on the Registry in 1982. However, it is presently being used as 100 units of housing for the elderly.
