A visit to Acworth’s historic downtown, located on a trading route once used by the Cherokee Indians, will introduce you to a prosperous railroad town (a caboose still stands today as a town landmark) that has never gone out of style.

It was Acworth’s location on the rail line that resulted in Sherman’s troops torching the town in 1864. Recovery was in full swing by 1879, however. Acworth’s commercial district grew to include two flour mills, a tannery and a cotton gin. Most of today’s buildings in downtown Acworth date from that late-1800s period. By the 1920s, Acworth benefited from its location on a major North-South thoroughfare, the Dixie Highway (Highway 41), and later from its proximity to Interstate 75.
