Tacoma's Theater District is a lively part of town to visit. The theaters offer great big name shows along with concerts from local orchestras and chorales and works by Tacoma Actor's Guild. Theater in the Square is a new building that houses the Tacoma Actor's Guild and is just up the stairs from the Theater District Light Rail Station. The above coordinates are near the historic Pantages and Rialto Theatres, both lovingly restored.

Down Broadway and Market Streets you'll find numerous little boutiques, art galleries, and tons of Antique stores. This portion of Market Street is nicknamed "Antique Row". Tully's has a wonderful coffeehouse at the corner of Broadway and 9th in the historic Bostwick Building.

The area is also rich with art. Near Theater in the Square you'll see a giant salmon in a fountain. There's another located near the Pantages Theater- both part of an art contest that featured salmon. There's also an amazing basalt sculpture in front of the Pantages. Up a block on Market Stree there's a great stone sculpture that I call "Owlet" outside the Tacoma Municipal Building, and at Broadway and 9th there's a large basalt sculpture in front of Tully's. On all the lightposts in the district are metal comedy and tragedy masks. There was also a sculpture competition featuring masks of different cultures so you'll see these masks and a plaque telling about how they were used on the walls of several of the area buildings.

If you have kids with you and they are getting bored the Tacoma Children's Museum is a block down from the Pantages Theatre. It's small, but well done and lots of fun for younger children.

There are numerous buildings in the area that are on the National, State and City's Historic Registers, so take your time and look up at the architecture too.
