This impressive, multipart memorial occupies a sizable, nicely landscaped, oval area in the large park that surrounds the state capitol building in Sacramento. The focal point of the memorial is the polished limestone wall bearing the names of California's fallen firefighters. There were 855 firefighters' names at the time of the memorial's unveiling in 2002 and others have sadly been added since that time. The name panels are flanked by "turnouts", bronze replicas of firefighter helmets and jackets.
Nearby are two bronze Sculptures. "Holding the line" shows three firefighters feeding a hose line to a fourth, who holds the nozzle. "Fallen Brother" depicts a sorrowful firefighter as he retrieves his lifeless comrade from the flames. The sculptures of both pieces used actual firefighters as models.
This impressive memorial was dedicated on April 6, 2002 in the presence of families of fallen firefighters and an annual ceremony is held each spring to honor those who have fallen in the previous year.
