In 1884, Walt Whitman purchased a modest two-story frame house on Mickle Street for $1750. It is the only house he ever owned. He lived there until his death in 1892, at the age of seventy-two. Walt Whitman lived in Camden from 1884 until his death. This is his final burial spot in Camden's Harleigh Cemetery.

Walt Whitman (May 31, 1819 – March 26, 1892) was an American poet, essayist, journalist, and humanist born on Long Island, New York. His most famous work is the collection of poetry, Leaves of Grass. Today, Whitman is widely regarded as one of the greatest American poets.
He is buried in Camden's Harleigh Cemetery, in a simple tomb of his own design.
