This building constructed between 1838 and 1842 served as the Johnson County Courthouse from 1842 to 1878. The building is was constructed of red brick in a Federal design and was stuccoed in 1870. The courthouse was the setting for the Old Drum trial in 1870 (see Old Drum waymark). This building remained the courthouse until the city shifted its center of activity to be closer to the railroad and a new small courthouse was built in 1867 and the last court was held in this building in 1878. This building is the oldest existing building in the county and currently is part of the Johnson County Historical Society Museum complex.
