Construction of the Cedar Keys Lighthouse began in March of 1894. The fourth order Fresnel lens was lit on August 1, 1894. It has a focal plane of 75 feet, which made the light visible for 15 miles. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, the light was extinquished, not to be re-lit until the end of the war in August 1866. The light stood guard until 1915 when it was extinquished for the final time. The lighthouse has been leased to the University of Florida since 1951 and serves as part of the Seahorse Key Marine Laboratory. The keepers house serves as a dormitory for the students during their studies. For information on visiting the lighthouse, contact the Cedar Key Chamber of Commerce.
