In Puako, the Puako Petroglyphs Archaeological Preserve (Via Mauna Lani and N. Kaniku Drs. to Holoholokai Beach Park; 0.8-mile [1.3-kilometer] trail begins in parking lot) protects 3,000 lava carvings of unknown age and indeterminate meaning. The images include stick figures, triangular torsos, and what may be columns of warriors marching with their chiefs.
There are a number of 'pictographs' at this location where early Hawai'ians travelled up and down the coast.
