This Veterans Memorial in front of the Seaside City Hall is easily overlooked. I admit it didn't get my attention because I thought it was a memorial but because I wanted to find the reason for the five different flags, representing parts of the US history. In front of the flags is a concrete circle with a plaque, reading
PRESENTED TO THE
CITY OF SEASIDE
IN MEMORY OF
VETERANS OF ALL WARS
PRESENTED BY
AMERICAN LEGION
SEASIDE POST 591
1970 |
Knowing this, the flag display made sense: First, there are the Grand Union Flag and the Betsy Ross Flag, both in memory of the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783). Then, there is a 15 Star Flag, flown from 1795 - 1818 in memory of the War of 1812.
Why there is then a 20-Star flag I don't know because the years 1818-1819 during which this flag was flown were exceptionally peaceful. The next flag, the 48 Star Flag, flown from 1912-1959 was the flag used in both World Wars and in the Korean War and the two current 50-star flags fly in honor of the veterans of all recent battles, from Viet Nam to Iraq.
