"The best use of an acre of dirt in Sunnyvale." This is how one resident described the Charles Street Community Gardens in Sunnyvale.
A year ago, it was an empty dirt lot overgrown with weeds. On Memorial Day '06, Sunnyvale's first community garden was born. It contains 90 garden beds, 5 of which are part of the Food Forest where all produce goes to Sunnyvale Cares, a group that serves the needy. The Santa Clara County Master Gardeners have 2 demonstration plots at the garden; there's a Growing Circle for outdoor training sessions; and there's even a herb garden in the shape of a peace sign.
