The park encompasses over 800 square miles on the Tennessee/North Carolina border in the southeastern United States. The park boasts over 850 miles of hiking trails with elevations from 875 feet to 6,643 feet.

The park receives over 9 million visitors a year making it the most popular National Park destination in the United States.
