After years of neglect, conservation efforts are being made to preserve this part of Wake County's history. Progress has not been easy. Midway through the process, a hurricane's flood waters destroyed the dam and damaged the building.
Today, this historic site is part of a 174-acre county park, which includes the mill's 20-acre pond. An outstanding visitor's area, in the adjacent A.E Finley Education and Research Center, features a video showing the mill's operation, along with old photos and exhibits.
The park is open from 8AM to Sunset, seven days a week, except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.
To reach from I-40/440 on the south side of Raleigh, take Exit 287 (Lake Wheeler Road) south. Cross Tryon Road and continue on Lake Wheeler Road. The entrance to the mill will be on your right, just before the intersection with Yates Mill Road.
