At 14 acres including a 4½-acre lake, Seiwa-en is one of the largest Japanese gardens in North America. The garden was designed by the late Koichi Kawana, a renowned professor of environmental design and landscape architecture at the University of California. The garden was dedicated in 1977. Kawana supervised the construction and further development until his death in 1990. He personally trained the current supervisor for the Japanese garden.
