During the days of the Republic of Texas (1838-1845) at least eleven criminals were hanged from its graceful boughs. Although others dispute the tale, the legend survives.
This tree is located in downtown Houston and when a courthouse was demolished nearby, the basement wall was left intact to protect the roots of the tree.
The Old Hanging Oak is thought by some to be the oldest tree in Harris County. It is maintained and preserved by the City of Houston Civic Center Department.
