Lake Placid Florida has an interesting history. It was named after Lake Placid New York. Dr. Melvil Dewey (of the famous library Dewey Decimal System) had the town named Lake Stearns renamed to Lake Placid. Commemorating much of the history of Lake Placid and southern Florida, a mural collection (40 in all plus extras) adorns the quiet town.
