The Lake County Captains play Class "A" baseball in the Northern Division of the South Atlantic League. The history of the franchise dates back to 1991, when the Columbus (GA) Indians were formed as an expansion team. The next year, they changed their name, and would play in Columbus as the RedStixx through the 2002 season.
In 2003, the team moved to their new home at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio, a suburb on the east side of Cleveland. Renamed the Lake County Captains, the team played their first home game on April 10, 2003, defeating the Charleston (WV) Alley Cats 5-3. Attendance at Classic Stadium that first year surpassed 450,000.
The South Atlantic League All-Star Game was hosted by the Captains in 2006. The RedStixx / Captains franchise has been a training ground for Major League players including Einar Diaz, Richie Sexson, C.C. Sabathia, and Willy Taveras. During a Captains game, be on the lookout for mascot Skipper, a big, green, furry creature in huge sneakers; and for Captain Clipper, a tall, inflatable sea captain.
The stadium hosts community programs including blood drives, food drives, and a children's reading program; there are occasional stadium tours; and group outings to the park can be scheduled.
