In 1906, John Huddlestone found the first diamond at this site. One successful attempt at commercial mining took place. It ended when the facilities were destroyed by arson. The area was then opened as a private tourest attraction, offering diamond collecting for a fee. In 1972 the State of Arkansas bought the land and turned it into a State Park.
The diamonds are found in a 35 acre field which is plowed at irregular intervals, weather has much to do with the plowing times. The diamonds found here were brought to the surface by a volcano that occured 100 million years ago. Most of the diamonds found here are white, yellow, or brown. Since the park opened, 25 diamonds have been found weighing over 5 Carats, with the largest weighing over 16 carats. The average rate of find since the park opened is over one per day. There is a fee for diamond searching; $6.50 Adults/$3.50 Children. An additional fee is charged if you wish to rent or purchase equiptment. A bucket, screen, and short handle shovel is usually used. Searching for reflections off the surface stones will work without tools.
