This bust sits atop a pink granite base engraved with the name "Petófi." An older plaque reads: "Sándor Petófi (1822-1849) the poet of Hungary. He lived, sang, fought and died for liberty." A rededication plaque reads: "Sandor Petófi, the poet of Hungary, a hero of heroes who lived, fought, and died for liberty 1822-1849. Originally erected by the Hungarians of Buffalo and vicinity in 1924, rededicated by the Petófi Kór 1988."
A replacement bust was commissioned after the original bust went missing. The artist for the replacement bust, Gabriella F. Koszorus-Varsa, was selected upon recommendation from the U.S. Ambassador to Hungary. The original bust was sculpted by Geza Kende. The memorial was dedicated July 4, 1925, with the replacement bust unveiled in 1992.
