Hillsboro, Ohio was once famous for the bells produced here. These bells were shipped around the world for use as church, school, farm and mission bells. In addition several thousand bells were cast here for U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships.

This bell was used on one of the 2 Coast Guard Cutter "Northwind." The first Northwind was commissioned Feb. 26, 1944 as an icebreaker, transfered to Russia and later returned to the US in 1951 when it was recommissioned as the "Staten Island." The second Northwind was commissioned July 28, 1945 as an icebreaker, and continued in service until it was decommissioned in 1989.
