In 1883, Patrick Barry and George Ellwanger offered the city of Rochester 19 hilltop acres of their nursery grounds for a memorial park. The city refused the offer, but 5 years later, in 1888, officals were convinced to accept the offer and the Rochester Park Commission was formed. Frederick Law Olmstead was hired to design the park. Barry and Ellwanger's vision for Highland Park was it would become an arboretum. They donated every shrub and tree growing in their nursery to form the core of the arboretum. Today, the park boasts 1,200 lilac shrubs, a Japanese Maple collection, 35 varieties of magnolias, a barberry collection, rock garden with dwarf evergreens, 700 varieties of rhododendorn, azaleas, mountain laurel and andromeda, horsechestnuts, spring bulbs, wild flowers and a large number of trees. The pansy bed features 10,000 plants and a new pattern is designed each year. The Lilac Festival takes place in Highland Park every May and brings visitors from around the world. The website listed below is for the Landmark Society of Western New York, they have a walking tour of Highland Park.
