In 1893, Detroit's growing Episcopalian congregation had outgrown St. Joseph’s Memorial Chapel and began construction of this Richardson Romanesque sandstone church. By 1907, St. Joseph's congregation had again grown too large for their building and the church was sold for $19,500 and converted to a Catholic parish. After the sale, some structural changes were made to allow the church to more closely resemble other Roman Catholic churches of the day, including the addition of the gilt statue of the Virgin Mary on top of the main tower. Today, the parish remains under the operation of Detroit's Catholic Archdiocese.
