Construction of this 13,000 square foot mansion was started in 1898 and completed in 1900. Mansion was designed by the architectural firm of Barnett, Haynes, and Barnett of St. Louis in a Colonial Revival style. Built for lumber baron John J. Cruikshank, the mansion uses the finest woods available including oak, walnut, and mahogany. The mansion has ten carved marble and tile fireplaces, nine bedrooms and seven bathrooms among its thirty rooms. The Cruikshank family resided in the house until John's death in 1924. The mansion was then boarded up for 43 years. The mansion was scheduled for demolition when it was saved and restored through the efforts of three families. When restoration was started it was found that many of the original furniture, artwork, and family personal artifacts were still in place The mansion is now used as a bed and breakfast and restaurant which is operated by the mansions third owner.
