South Dakota artist and successful illustrator Harvey Dunn was active during the first half of the twentieth century and was a regular contributor to Collier's, Harper's, The Saturday Evening Post, and Scribner's, among others. He also served as an artist-correspondent with the American Expeditionary Force in Europe during World War I. And, he was one of twenty illustrators whose works were featured on a 2001 U.S. postal issue.

The painting chosen for the stamp was one of almost 40 paintings which Dunn donated to South Dakota State University, his alma mater, in 1951. It, along with a few other donations formed the foundation of the South Dakota Art Museum’s collection.
