Marker Name: History of the Depot
Marker Type: Other (Please identify in marker text)
Marker text: The Ellis Railroad Museum secured the Penokee, Kansas Depot in 1933. It was donated in Memory of Richard E. Schmidt by his family in 1998, but the museum was responsible for moving it to the site in Ellis later that year. This depot is smaller than the original Ellis depot. Both the General Motors Miniature Aerotrain Garage and the Penokee Depot were painted white and green in 2020 to reflect the colors of the original Ellis Depot which was built in 1901.
The original Ellis Depot was located directly across the street and north of the Memorial Park from where you currently stand. It was constucted parallel to the railroad tracks, with the west side designated for passenger use, and the east side for loading freight.
In 1972, with the end of passenger trains, there was no longer any need for the Ellis Depot, and in 1976, the Union Pacific vacated the location. It was later razed.
