In 1949, the Stichting Schouwburg Aruba (SSA) foundation was established with the specific aim of building a cultural center on the island of Aruba. About ten years later, the cultural center was finally opened and thirty years later (1979) that building appeared on a postage stamp commemorating the 30th anniversary of the SSA.

The building was designed by F. F. Zingel, an architect from Curaçao. Zingel even designed the triangular artwork for the building’s façade. That artwork has been painted over several times and now the façade shows huge program posters. The somewhat stylized design of the stamp, which is over 45 years old, shows the façade’s original triangular design. It also shows the original entranceway which has been substantially modified since then.

Today, the cultural center has been renamed Cas di Cultura which is Papiamento for ‘House of Culture.’ It is still owned and operated by the SSA and, besides being a performance venue, contains both a music school and a dance school and offers courses in fine art.
