The statue of Sir Walter Scott sits beneath the Scott Monument in Edinburgh, Scotland. This Gothic Revival monument was built between 1840-1846 to honor the famous Scottish author and poet Walter Scott (1771-1832), who wrote novels like Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, and Waverley.
The statue itself was carved by Sir John Steell from white Carrara marble and is mounted on a stone plinth within the monument's Gothic arches. The figure is larger than life-size, making it an imposing presence even from street level about 60 feet below.
The statue depicts Scott in a seated, contemplative pose, dressed in early 19th-century gentleman's attire including a long coat or cloak. He appears to be holding a book or manuscript in his hands, reflecting his identity as a writer. His faithful deerhound Maida lies at his feet, capturing the author's well-known love for his pets. Scott's pose suggests he's pausing in his reading or writing to gaze thoughtfully out over Edinburgh.
The Scott Monument itself is quite distinctive - often called the "Gothic rocket" due to its spire-like appearance, reaching about 200 feet high. It's one of Edinburgh's most recognizable landmarks and visitors can climb the narrow spiral staircase inside to viewing platforms for panoramic views of the city.
