En Península de Yucatán podemos disfrutar de una hermosa naturaleza y fauna, y de algunos fenómenos naturales únicos. En Calakmul hay uno de ellos: puedes ver millones de murciélagos salir de una cueva, una experiencia alucinante.

Como ya sabemos, el terreno kárstico de la Península, permite la formación de oquedades de todo tipo en la zona. Uno de los habitantes de estas cavernas son los murciélagos. En la cueva de los murciélagos de Calakmul conviven 9 especies, 8 insectívoras y 1 nectarívora, se alimenta del néctar. Tendrás muchas oportunidades de ver murciélagos en la Península, pero ninguna seguramente tan asombrosa como aquí. Para conocerlos un poco, sólo decir que los murciélagos son parte importante de la cadena natural al reducir plagas comiendo insectos y dispersar las semillas por el habitat.
Es fácil acudir puntual a la cita con: cada día al acaso salen en busca de alimento los 2,3 millones de murciélagos que se estima que hay en esta cueva, un espectáculo alucinante. Por la boca de la caverna que te queda a 50 metros bajo tus pies, podrás ver durante más de tres horas murciélagos formando un torbellino y zumbido imparable ascendiendo en espiral por las paredes de la cueva, para luego convertirse en una gran nube negra en el cielo. A la salida también los esperan depredadores como aves rapaces. Te lo digo, un espectáculo.
Me explicó un guía que conocí allí que dentro de la caverna los murciélagos se agrupan en comunas según su especie. Cuando llega el atardecer empiezan su actividad de caza. Los primeros murciélagos en salir son los soldados, cada especie tiene los suyos. Los soldados son los de menor rango dentro de la cadena, los que se la juegan saliendo sin la protección que tienen los del gran grueso. Los primeros minutos quizás te parezca algo insulso el torbellino, pero poco a poco te verás rodeado de miles de murciélagos pasando tan cerca tuyo que alguno puede toparse contra ti.
Como tantas maravillas de esta Península, no es un lugar masificado, así que podrás asistir al evento casi en la intimidad. Las normas del lugar va cambiando según quién lo administra. En febrero del 2015 el acceso era gratuito.

From the mouth of the cave, 50 meters below your feet, you can watch for more than three hours as the bats form a whirlwind and an unstoppable buzz, spiraling up the walls of the cave and then becoming a large black cloud in the sky. A guide I met there explained to me that inside the cave, the bats group themselves into communities according to their species. When dusk falls, they begin their hunting activity. The first bats to leave are the soldiers, each species has its own. The soldiers are the lowest in the chain, the ones who take a risk by leaving without the protection of the larger group. The first few minutes, the whirlwind may seem a bit dull, but little by little you will find yourself surrounded by thousands of bats flying so close to you that some may bump into you.
Like so many wonders of this peninsula, it is not a crowded place, so you can attend the event in almost complete privacy. The rules of the place change depending on who administers it. In February 2015, access was free.
