Texas native Orvon Grover "Gene" Autry’s ability to sing and play guitar often had him performing at local dances and other gatherings when he was a teenager. Eventually he landed a recording contract after performing on the radio in the late 1920s. He would go on to record over 600 songs, half of then written or co-written by himself. As a recording artist, he is especially known for his renditions of Christmas songs such as ‘Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer’ which is still commonly heard today.
In the mid-1930s, Autry first appeared in a western motion picture put out by Republic Motion Pictures. By 1940, he was Republic’s top star. In all, Autry appeared in 93 films and had his own television show in the 1950s. The multifaceted Autry became the only man to have five stars on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, one in each category: recording, television, radio, motion pictures and live performance.
In addition to his recording and acting careers, Gene Autry was also a big promoter of rodeo and was principal owner of the California Angels baseball team. He is considered an important pioneer in the genre of country music, second only to Jimmie Rodgers.
Gene Autry died in 1998 at the age of 91. He is buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills section of Los Angeles.
