In 2012, the U.S. Postal Service issued a new set of first-class postage stamps available only in large coil rolls for use by mass mailers. The stamps had five designs featuring folk-art weathervanes from the Shelburne Museum’s extensive collection. This one shows a cast iron rooster with a sheet iron tail manufactured by the Rochester Iron Works of Rochester, NH. This company produced a number of different horse and rooster weathervanes during last quarter of the 19th century. Typically, the body consisted of cast iron halves with a sheet iron tail sandwiched between.
The Shelburne Museum, in Shelburne, VT, contains an eclectic collection of folk, decorative and fine art. Among its extensive collections are about 500 quilts, 1400 duck decoys, 1000 dolls and 140 weathervanes.
