Estructura I

Sign

Estructura I

Structure I is, after Structure II, the second tallest in Calalumul. In its current state, it stands 40 meters high. As we can admire it today, it was built in the second half of the 7th century AD and is particularly associated with the reign of Yukno'm To'K' K'awlil' (702-713 AD). This figure erected several stelae at the foot of the structure, including three large altars on top of it.
Archaeological explorations have detected a substructure that was built around seven or eight centuries before (between 50 BC and 150 AD) the last construction phase. A monumental mask was found in the second section of the upper base, which forms part of the substructure. It is a mask with human features, measuring 64 m by 4.60 m in height, made of limestone blocks with features modeled in stucco.
This structure is interesting because it is somewhat isolated from the rest of the urban layout. The main façade faces west and, as it is built on an 8-meter-high artificial platform, it gives the impression of being taller than the second stage. So far, no other substructures have been identified inside that provide information about its construction sequence.
