"The oldest house in Cloppenburg is located at Mühlenstraße 51. Today, it is the corner house at Mühlenstraße/Antoniusplatz. This was not always the case. Until the 1960s, Mühlenstraße was one house longer to the right (north), making it the penultimate house on the street front. The inscription above the door tells us the year it was built. AD 1695, 10 May.

Originally, the house had no windows in the gable. Gable rooms were used as harvest storage rooms or as material storage rooms for craftsmen. The inscription reads: ‘IN HAPPINESS YOU WILL HAVE ENEMIES/ WHO ENVY GOD'S GIFTS TO YOU/ BUT CONTINUE ON YOUR PATH/ WITH A CLEAR CONSCIENCE AND RIGHT ACTIONS’. It contained something of a warning. In happiness – even if it is God-given – there will always be envious people."
