"El Escudo de la Orden de San Francisco nos muestra dos brazos cruzados sobre la cruz Tau o Tao, que es la última letra del alfabeto hebreo. El primer brazo desnudo representa a Jesucristo y el segundo a San Francisco de Asís, fundador de la Orden franciscana. Cada mano tiene una herida en su palma. Estas representan las marcas de los clavos que recibió Jesús en su pasión y muerte. San Francisco experimentó los estigmas: a él se le aparecieron también las mismas llagas que sufrió Cristo. Por esta razón, San Francisco es conocido como el reflejó de Cristo. El significado del escudo de los Franciscanos es la conformidad de san Francisco con Cristo: el crucificado del Alvernia con el Crucificado del Gólgota. En algunos escudos se llega a una conformidad tal, como se ve en un escudo del Sacro Convento de Asís (1478) en que aparece una cruz grafiada y las manos clavadas en ella.

La difusión del escudo franciscano de los brazos cruzados de Cristo y de Francisco se lleva a cabo durante el generalato de Francisco Sansón (1475-1499), quien a través de las muchas obras de arte que encarga y dona a las iglesias de Asís, Padua, Florencia, Brescia…, hace que se convierta en el escudo propio de la Orden Franciscana."
