This parish church was established in 1935 to attend to the spiritual needs of the growing population of Panama City which was moving outward from the Old Town area. The church was built by the Claretian Fathers in the traditional style. It is the parish church of the Calidonia corregimiento in Panama City.

In 1962, Panama issued a set of 19 postage stamps, half of them airmail, celebrating religious freedom. The stamps showed 19 different houses of worship from different parts of the country including the U.S.-administered Canal Zone. Iglesia de Cristo Rey appears on this lowest value of the airmail portion.
