Shiloh Baptist Church, located at 1983 Millwood Road in Millwood (Clarke County), was founded by African American residents soon after Emancipation. The congregation purchased the current church building in 1921 for $1,500. The stucco, T-shaped structure with a square steeple was originally built in 1892 and serves as one of the historical landmarks of the Millwood African American community.
The church played a central role in Millwood’s post-Civil War development. In the early 1870s, many formerly enslaved people purchased land nearby and built homes and community institutions in the area. Shiloh Baptist became a spiritual anchor in that growing African American neighborhood on Millwood Road.
Visually modest, Shiloh sits just west of the Millwood post office and is part of the larger Chapel Rural Historic District—a rural area with deep ties to early Clarke County history. Today, the church continues to serve local worshippers and stands as a testament to the enduring faith and resilience of an important community in Virginia’s African American history.
