From the earliest colonial days to the first part of the nineteenth century, Costa Rica was not known to be particularly tolerant of religions other than Roman Catholicism. That began to change toward the middle of the nineteenth century when it was felt that some immigration from predominantly protestant northern Europe would be necessary in order to provide services for modernization such as banking and engineering.
What would become the Good Shepherd church was established in 1865 by John Le Lacheur, son of coffee exporter William Le Lacheur of Guernsey who had previously obtained permission for the few Anglicans in Costa Rica to worship openly. He imported a prefabricated iron church building from England and for many years it was called the ‘iron church.’ The current building dates to the 1960s, I think, and is now operated under the auspices of the Episcopalians.
The stamp was issued in 2015, the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Good Shepherd church in San Jose. It was only issued in the form of a souvenir sheet of a single stamp with simulated perforations. Also seen in the selvage is the stained-glass window behind the altar.
