Baroque bell tower with two semicircular arched openings, painted white, and featuring two bells inside.

"The Brotherhood was created on November 20, 1501, for social welfare purposes, following the founding initiative of Queen Eleanor of Lancaster, wife of King John II of Portugal and sister of his successor, King Manuel I. In 1520, the King ordered its relocation to the Hermitage of the Holy Spirit, opposite the Puerta de Los Ángeles. Although the first works began in 1548 and continued throughout the same century, the church only achieved its current appearance in 1732. Of its founding purposes—hospital, collection and protection of foundlings, assistance to prisoners and condemned prisoners, burials, and asylum—it currently maintains only the latter, with its excellent facilities.

Three Baroque altarpieces stand out in its interior, the main one being a Portuguese post-Tridentine display altarpiece, with a later addition of Our Lady of Loreto. Those in the nave are dedicated, the one on the Gospel side to the Holy Spirit, and the one on the Epistle to Mercy. All the walls are covered with historic tiles from 1723, signed by Manoel dos Santos, depicting the corporal works of mercy.
