"The statue of Our Lady of Hayange is the great work of Father Riff, archpriest of Hayange, but the initial idea belongs to Mrs. Junger, née Catherine Humbert. In her will, the latter left a bequest of 15,000 francs (€2,286.73) to the Church Council. According to her wishes, part of this money was to be used to erect a statue of the Virgin Mary on the Côte des Vignes overlooking the parish of Hayange.

Father Riff took this project to heart and collected funds from all the houses in the parish. Once the funds were raised, he chose a location from which the Virgin Mary would overlook Hayange, the valley, and the surrounding region. Then, accompanied by Father Leglise, he went to the hills of Vaudemont, to Notre-Dame de Sion, where he chose the Virgin Mary as a model. He commissioned it.

Work began on May 19, 1903, and was completed by the end of October of the same year. The statue alone cost 12,000 francs (€1,819.37). Made of cast iron cast in local factories, weighing 6.5 tons, it stands 7 meters tall on a 14-meter-high granite pedestal.

Abbé Riff died on Good Friday 1904 before its completion. It was therefore Abbé Besnard who prepared the inauguration, which took place on October 2, 1904. For many years, every August 15th, Notre-Dame de Hayange became a place of pilgrimage.

The bombings spared the statue, but time left its mark of rust on the building. To restore it, a public subscription was launched. Donations poured in from everywhere, including one from Jean-Paul Belmondo, the lead actor in the film "L'Héritier," whose first images depict the Virgin of Hayange. Restoration took place in 1982.

A light now illuminates it at night. Like an apparition, it watches over this valley, hard hit by the crisis, with open arms, of which it remains a symbol and a source of hope."
