The Heart of Midlothian Memorial Clock is a commemorative structure located in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was erected in memory of the players and supporters of Heart of Midlothian Football Club who lost their lives during World War I and World War II. The memorial stands near the club’s home ground, Tynecastle Park, and serves as a reminder of the club’s deep historical ties to the local community and its remarkable wartime legacy.
Heart of Midlothian F.C. is renowned for being one of the first football clubs to see its players enlist en masse during the Great War. In November 1914, several members of the first team volunteered to join the 16th Royal Scots, also known as McCrae’s Battalion. This act of bravery and solidarity left a lasting impression on Scottish football and is a source of immense pride for the club and its supporters.
The memorial clock, featuring classic design elements and the club’s emblematic heart symbol, is more than just a functional object—it is a living tribute. It not only marks the hours of the day but also honors the timeless sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service. Today, fans and visitors often pause at the clock, reflecting on the club’s heritage and the cost of war.
The memorial was designed by Sir Thomas Duncan Rhind KBE (1871–1927) and sculpted by Henry Snell Gamley RSA. Its construction was executed by John Angus & Sons, based near Tynecastle Stadium. It was unveiled on 9 April 1922 (Battle of Arras anniversary) by Robert Munro, then Secretary of State for Scotland, in front of approximately 40,000 spectators.
The structure is an ashlar stone pedestal topped with a tapering shaft and squat obelisk.
Clock faces occupy the east and west sides, above bronze plaques and battle-honour panels, with lion heads holding wreaths at each chamfered corner.
