The modern country of Italy didn’t take its current form until after World War I. Nevertheless, March 17, 1861, the date of the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy under Victor Emmanuel II, is regarded as the birth of the unified nation. In a 2011 joint issue with Italy, Vatican City celebrated the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy with a souvenir sheet of one stamp. This is a little ironic in that Rome wasn’t part of the unified country in 1861 - that would occur about ten years later.
The stamp shows a view of the Piazza del Popolo in Rome. This neoclassical square took its current form in the early 19th century. The main feature is a large Egyptian obelisk brought to Rome in 1 BC by order of Augustus. It originally stood at the Circus Maximus but was relocated here at the end of the 16th century by Pope Sixtus V. The obelisk, now called the Flaminio obelisk, is clearly visible on the stamp as are the “twin” 17th-century churches of Santa Maria in Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli which straddle the Via del Corso.
