At 190 acres, the Montreal Botanical Garden is one of the largest in the world. Founded in 1931, its mission is to conserve and develop living plant collections, conduct research activities and provide botanical and horticultural education to visitors. The garden boasts 22,000 different plant species contained in 20 thematic gardens including exceptional Chinese and Japanese gardens. They even have a poisonous plant section - it’s the only time I’ve seen poison ivy being grown on purpose.
The stamp was one of five different designs issued in 1991 featuring public gardens from all across Canada. It shows the Art-Deco administration building, designed by architect Lucien F. Kéroack, as seen at a distance from the main entrance.
