The Shelburne Museum, in Shelburne, Vermont, was founded in 1947 by Electra Havemeyer Webb, youngest daughter of sugar magnate Henry Osborne Havemeyer, to house her extensive collection of cigar store Indians, hunting decoys, weather vanes and other forms of Americana and folk art. Today, the museum’s collection contains approximately 1400 decoys scattered over every corner of the place. In 1985, the U.S. Postal Service issued a set of four stamps showing duck decoys, two of which are from the Shelburne’s extensive collection.

This particular decoy of a canvasback dates to around 1930 and was carved by Robert McGaw of Havre de Grace, Maryland. It once belonged to Joel Barber who was one of the first collectors to appreciate decoys for their artistic quality. Barber’s entire collection of over 400 decoys was purchased by the Shelburne Museum in 1952. Many of these, including the canvasback on the stamp, are displayed at the museum’s Dorset House.
