Dedicated November 18th 2023, This memorial consists of a large concrete pad, shaped like an "Arlington Tombstone" on which are placed over 50 bricks, each having the final statistics of the unmark grave somewhere in this large cemetery. The bricks are placed in the shape of a Christian Cross, and at the head of the memorial is a bench dedicated to all those below.
This is a Pooter's Field Memorial, those who were destitute, those who were unknown, those lost souls that the community took care of the final acts of their lives.
"Remembering Those Buried in Potter’s Field
In the Wright City Cemetery, an area on the south side of Block 1 is designated as potter’s field. This area has been reserved for the burial of indigent individuals, those who were unable to afford the cost of a burial. The first burial in the Wright City Cemetery potter’s field was in the 1880’s. There are 53 known burials in Potter's field. These include 11 infants.
"Only 20 of these burials are marked with a gravestone that was placed by a family member or friend. There is no marker for the remaining 33 individuals.
"The Memorial Society has always felt that these individuals needed to be honored with a marker, so the idea was developed to have a memorial brick patio constructed in the potter’s field area. The remaining 33 individuals now have a marker within a cross on the newly completed brick patio.
"Thank you to Jake Boyd of Boyd Walls, and Will Adcock of Mathews Concrete for bringing the Society’s idea to reality. Also, a big thank you to an anonymous donor for the bricks with the printed names.
The Memorial Society plans to have a dedication to this new memorial on Saturday, November 18th at 10 am. Join us in paying tribute to those in Potter’s Field and dedicating this new addition to the Wright City Cemetery
"The Potter's Field Memorial is complete!!
Yesterday, Memorial Society members landscaped around the top part of the memorial and back filled with topsoil around the bottom part, fertilizer, sowed grass seed, strawed and put netting down to keep the straw in place.
