During Kempten's time as a double city (monastery city and imperial city), today's town hall square was the core of the imperial city. It served as a marketplace and represented both the economic and social center of the imperial city. Stately patrician buildings based on the late Middle Ages line the former market street of the imperial city. In 1576, a market fountain was erected in front of the town hall. This was later moved and remodeled so that the 17th-century version with the octagonal stone basin and bronze column can be seen today. This environment can be enjoyed particularly well in summer, when the surrounding restaurants serve their outdoor seating, of course with a view of the historic town hall.

As early as 1368 there was a half-timbered house on the site of today's city hall, which was partly used as a city hall beginning in 1382. However, it was mainly a granary, which was replaced in 1474 by a simple stone building. This city hall was then rebuilt several times, including when the imperial and monastery towns were combined and the town was given a joint administrative board. The last conversion with extensive changes in the room layout and the outside area took place between 1985 and 1987. The Lord Mayor and the mayors are still based in this historic building on the Rathausplatz in Kempten, which also houses the wedding room and meeting rooms. The rest of the city administration is spread over several buildings within the city center.
