Charles Henry Hackley (January 3, 1837 – February 10, 1905) was an American timber baron and philanthropist. Born in Michigan City, he moved to Muskegon with his family as a young man and lived there the rest of his life. After a successful career as a lumberman, he used his fortune to construct a libray, a hospital, an art museum, the first kindergarten, and the first manual training school in the state of Michigan. This life-sized bronze sculpture, by William F. Duffy, depicts the stern-faced Hackley garbed in a period business suit and sitting upright on a bench with a cane in his left hand, and leaving plenty of room for others to join him. Two plaques on the bench offers additional information.
