The sign reads as follows:
'"Nature's water filter" is important to the ecology of the Saucon Creek watershed.
HELLERTOWN MARSH is the largest remnant of a lengthy system of wetlands that once flanked Saucon Creek and its tributaries. The marsh is formed on top of glacial sediments that were deposited during the Pleistocene Epoch, some 850,000 years ago. The glacial sediments have been covered by sediments deposited by Saucon and Silver creeks, a process that continues to this day whenever
the creeks flood into the marsh.
Wetlands are natural filtering systems that extract sediments and pollutants and cleanse water that enters them. The wetland soils and plants that provide this service form a unique habitat for uncommon wildlife species. Hellertown Marsh is recognized as suitable bog turtle habitat and also supports several threatened and endangered Pennsylvania plant species.'
Flair in the corners:
'Upper Left: Root systems of cattails and other plants filter pollutants
Lower Left: The marsh is a sanctuary for birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.
Upper right: Sediments carried by Saucon Creek floodwaters settle the marsh.
Lower right: Blue flag iris and other native plants populate the marsh.'
