Cerro Paranal is home to the Very Large Telescope, one of the world's leading optical/infrared astronomical observatories. Observatory staff and visiting astronomers stay in a building known as the Residencia (or ESO Hotel) a little over 2 km southeast of the telescopes. The Residencia serves as an artificial oasis in the midst of the harsh conditions of the Atacama Desert. It includes a restaurant, indoor garden, swimming pool, offices and about 100 guest rooms.

The Residencia was used as filming location for the Perla de Las Dunas hotel in "Quantum of Solace". Actors on location included Daniel Craig, Mathieu Amalric, Olga Kurylenko, Joaquin Cosio and Jesus Ochoa. My PhD thesis advisor was visiting Paranal at the time. She recalls giving Daniel Craig a tour of the telescopes after filming wrapped for the day.
