An interesting old water well pump on display in a square of Faro.

This device is based in a technology brought to what is now Portugal upon their invasion and establishment from 711 to 1249 (ironically, with the Portuguese conquest of Faro). They were called Norias and the same still exist in modern Portuguese with a slight variation: Noras.

What's amazing is that the concept had generalized use in farms and even urban areas for the next seven centuries. Even nowadays it's possible to observe decaying well water pumps like these spread around in the south Portugal countryside.

Well, this was brought here by the municipality for exhibition, but by now its condition is almost as poor as those abandoned in lost farms. Sadly. Still is a good thing that younger generations can see this old machinery. Perhaps it will make them curious and learn more about them.
