"Fort St. Elmo (or St. Elmo) is a fortification located in Valletta, on the island of Malta. It faces the sea at the tip of the Sciberras Peninsula, which separates Marsamxett Harbour from the Grand Harbour and dominates the entrance to both.

Before the arrival of the Knights of Malta in 1530, a watchtower existed on the site; the fortification of this strategic location began in 1533. By the time of the Siege of Malta by the Turks in 1565, the fortress had been reinforced and enlarged, converting it into a small star-shaped fort, but it was in very poor defensive conditions, particularly the lack of loopholes for protected firing from above and areas barely covered by defensive fire, allowing attackers to get very close to the walls.

Since the mid-20th century, Fort St. Elmo has housed the Malta Police Academy. The original George Cross, awarded to Malta by King George VI in 1942, is on display in the War Museum, which occupies part of the fort."
